What I Did On My 39th Birthday

Take a look at what I did and received for my 39th birthday.

Well Merry Christmas, Happy New Year, and Happy MLK day! It’s been a hot minute since my last blog post. I’m excited to get back into doing something that I love that brings me so much joy and inspiration. I just celebrated my 39th birthday on January 15th, which is what this post is about. I decided to take a break from work and get some much needed rejuvenation. It most certainly helped. I usually take some time off in January around my birthday to reflect and get myself prepared for the year. I didn’t make any goals or resolutions so to speak. I had this epiphany and realized that all I really want to focus on doing this year is live more and worry less. It’s a new decade and my last year in my 30s, so I want to make sure I go into my 40s with a new perspective and mindset. I’ve been a hot mess in my 30s, and the way I see it, it can only get better from here.

So what did I do for my birthday? Well….not much. My husband took me out for lunch at a restaurant called JCT Kitchen & Bar in Atlanta. We’ve been there once before on a date night and enjoyed it. For appetizers, we ordered the deviled eggs and truffle fries. They were so good. I especially liked the sauce that comes with the fries. The deviled eggs were topped with ham, which may sound like a bad combination, but they were really good. 6SQa4hfcSaClKKrl+YxF5w

We ordered the chicken and biscuits for our main entree. It too was delicious. The biscuits tasted a little like the biscuits from KFC but better. We also ordered the greens and mac and cheese as our sides. The greens were seasoned to perfection and mixed with carrots. They were not at all crunchy, but were just the right texture to thoroughly enjoy. The fried chicken was awesome. Somebody’s grandma fixed that chicken up just right. I’m not a big fried chicken fan, but that made me fall in love. The mac and cheese was a nice size portion big enough to share. It wasn’t the best I’ve ever had, but it was tasty.

I really didn’t have any plans for my birthday at all. My husband kept asking me what I wanted to do, but I couldn’t think of anything. So after lunch, I decided at the very last minute to do something totally random but much needed. I made the decision to go furniture shopping. I’m not sure why I chose to do that on my birthday, but when is a good time to do such a grown up task? I’ve been wanting to purchase a desk for our home office area, which has been empty since we moved into our home a few years ago. I actually wasn’t sure what I wanted to do with the space. I knew I didn’t want to turn it into a formal living room because that would just be a waste of space. I wanted the area to be functional. My kids needed a space to do homework, and I needed a space to write and create content.

We stopped by one of our favorite furniture stores Havertys Furniture to just browse around and get some inspiration. I didn’t think I would find what I was looking for, but of course I was wrong. They are having a going out of business sale.  Everything on the show room floor is discounted. I’m not one to pass up a deal so I had to jump all on that. We ended up purchasing a desk, chair, chaise lounge, and file cabinet at a great price.

I’ll be doing a home office tour very soon. I’ve just about finished decorating to my liking, but I have a few finishing touches before the big reveal. So stay tuned for that blog post coming very soon!

What I Got For My Birthday

I received the furniture for my birthday, but I also got something I’ve been wanting for a while now. I received a treadmill a week before my birthday. I know some people would find that strange, but I requested it. I’ve been trying to get back into my fitness game since working dayshift, and knew I didn’t want to spend another dime on a gym membership. We’ve basically turned a part of our basement into a home gym which is more economical in the end. I’ll do a tour of it as well when we’ve completed it. It’s still a work in progress.

I also purchased a few things for myself of course. I added a few items to my wardrobe, and ordered some new eyeglasses from Warby Parker. I don’t have them at the time of writing this blog post so I’ll just show you a picture of them. I already have some clear frames and some tortoise shell frames, and wanted to add some black ones to change up my looks. You will more than likely see my wardrobe pieces in later blog posts as I’ll be doing some styling posts.

This has probably been one of the best birthdays I’ve had in a while. Not because of what I’ve received materialistically, but what I’ve received spiritually. My spirit and mind have been renewed during my time away from work. I took off for twelve days straight not just for my birthday, but for my mental detoxification. Sometimes we just need a break before we reach our breaking point. I’ve learned that the hard way. Life is about enjoying each moment while you can and finding a way to live a life of fulfillment. Do what makes you happy. If buying furniture and a treadmill is your happiness, then you do you! You’ll be lighter and have a house you can be proud to call home. Take care of yourself as well as others.
