And be continually renewed in the spirit of your mind (having a fresh, untarnished mental and spiritual attitude), and put on the new self (the regenerated and renewed nature), created in God’s image, (god-like) in the righteousness and holiness of the truth (living in a way that expresses to God your gratitude for your salvation.) -Ephesians 4:23-24
Change Your Mindset
So much of who we are and how we think is based on how we were taught and experiences we have had to endure. The way that we think becomes so second nature. Think about some of the people that you know on a personal level. You would either describe them as a positive person or someone who is always negative. Now think about this individual and the life they’ve been dealt. Would you say they are justified in the way that they think? Now how would you describe yourself? How would others describe you? There is so much power in our thoughts, but is it possible to change how we think?
Change Your Attitude
Think about something negative that you always say. Turn that into something positive and repeat it everyday until you believe it. The reason why a vast majority of us don’t speak anything positive is because we don’t believe in what we say. It’s as if it’s easier to believe the negative. We just don’t believe something positive could ever happen to and for us. The truth of the matter is that anything is possible if you believe it’s possible. Instead of saying today is going to be a rough or bad day, say today is going to be a great day. Then repeat this within yourself throughout the day so you don’t get distracted by curve balls that may get thrown your way. You won’t notice them, because you believe within yourself that it’s going to be a good day. Just by saying it’s going to be a bad day, you are speaking that into existence. Speak a positive day into existence instead.
Change Your Environment
A great deal of the problems that we have with our mindset is directly related to our environment. If you are constantly around negative people and negative behavior, then chances are you will mimic that behavior. We would rather be around the familiar even though it’s toxic to our mentality. Don’t settle for good enough just because you are afraid to take a stand and walk away. It doesn’t matter if it’s a loved one or friend. We have to let some people go in order for us to elevate our thinking so we can have peace of mind. Steve Harvey once said something along the lines of if you want to be successful, you have to surround yourself around successful people. It’s quite an easy formula really. Likewise, if you surround yourself around positive people, you will think more positively. Hence, you will yield more positive outcomes in your life.
Practice Makes Perfect
Changing a bad habit can be quite the difficult task. It takes just as long to break a bad habit as it does to make one. Don’t think that you can change your behavior overnight. It takes lots of practice and focus. If your goal is to change your way of thinking, then your focus has to continually be on thinking positively. We give up because we don’t see instant results or we say I guess this is just the way I am. No one should be satisfied with living in a negative state of being. If you are tired of living the life you’re living and feel like there is more to life than where you are, then a lot of it has to do with how you think. If you don’t think you can do any better, then chances are you won’t do any better. Furthermore, you won’t take the necessary steps to do better.
Practicing gratitude on a daily basis is so important. Showing God how much we appreciate Him for all the things that He has done for us even when we didn’t deserve it is key. Worshipping and praising God is one such way to show Him how much we appreciate Him. Thanking God on a continual basis for saving us from an eternity of damnation can help change your mindset because you realize that He is the supreme being and nothing or nobody else is as powerful as God. God has the ability to help us change our mentality. When we meditate on the goodness of God and all that he has done for us, our focus and mindset shifts. We are suddenly so full of goodness that negativity has no room to reside. You will become a more positive being, and you will attract all things positive to your life.
